What if I told you that your body remembers everything you have ever done. Even the stuff you don’t remember from your childhood and beyond.
Your body keeps the score.
If you sprain your ankle, you limp and as you continue to get better there will be a difference in how your foot hits the ground. This is a memory.
This goes the same for emotional stress and trauma. If you are in a stressful environment for an extended amount of time, your shoulders and back or neck will start to harden. This may seem to go away over time but does it? I find that the pain or stress I was having becomes numb and I eventually don’t feel it anymore and I forget about it.
Flexibility
We could even look at flexibility. Can you reach down and touch your toes? Everyone will have varying degrees of success depending on how they lived and treated their bodies. These too are memories.
Let’s take this a step further. I want you to feel around in your quadricep or forearm and feel for anything hot, hard, or tender. Gently dig into that area. Something happened here because there is pain… but what happened? Could it have been physical or emotional injury? Do you even remember what it was?
It’s ok, I don’t remember all the things that have happened to me either. I have had a lot of injuries and they continue to pile up. Is there a process of healing these injuries?
The process of loosening up and living life.
I am working on the lack of flexibility and pain within my body with yoga, meditation, and Myofascial Release (MFR- it is like a yoga massage with long holds/ meditation). It is a conscious and spiritual journey for me. I am doing this because I want to live life fully and not be held back by a bad knee or lack of flexibility.
What story does your body tell?
