Yes, your hip is connected to your jaw. What a weird thing to say…
Your head is also connected to your feet and I don’t just mean through your bones. It also connects with your nerves, blood vessels, and, of course, your connective tissue (AKA fascia).
Have you ever gotten a massage and felt a tingling in another part of your body? That is your body’s connective “web”.
A 3-D Web
The connective tissue is a three-dimensional web that connects your head to your toes and everywhere in between. When you traumatize one part of your body, it pulls tension on all areas of your body just like a spider’s web. When this goes on for long enough, there is an increased chance for tightness, bones being pulled out of place, and nerves and blood vessels being pinched. That is why it is important to perform some sort of self-care or stretching every day!
Check out this video on connective tissue. You don’t need to understand everything that is being said, just watch and observe. See how much it looks like a “Web”!
Why are my therapists treating my whole body rather than my specific area of pain?
You might be having pain in one specific area, but that might not be where the pain is coming from. For example, pain that someone has in their leg or foot can be coming from a pinched nerve in the spine or hips. The body acts like a teeter-totter. If one area gets traumatized or injured, that injury tightens down on the fascia, like a fly caught in a 3-D web, and pulls on other areas of the body and can cause pain and inflammation in a different area. The MFR philosophy is to look at the entire being, not to just focus on where the symptoms are. This way the therapist can focus on finding the root of the problem and facilitate true healing in their clients.
